Suspected Palembang Terrorist Cell on Trial

VIVAnews – Ten suspects believed to be involved in terrorism will attend their first hearing today at 11.00am, Monday, Jan.5.

Their attorney, from Muslim Defenders Team, Ashludin Hatjani, said that his 10 clients will be tried at the South Jakarta District Court. “There are four documents in total,” said Hatjani.

In one documents, said Hatjani, there are two or three suspects. “But still, all will be tried together today,” he said.

Among the suspects is a Singaporean citizen, initials MH, 35 years old. He is suspected of being the bomb expert and was arrested on 28 June 2008. The nine other suspects are those that have undergone training in assembling bombs. They range from age 22 to 42.

The investigation of the case of alleged terrorism in Palembang was completed on Thursday, 30 October. Police spokesperson, Inspector General Abubakar Nataprawira had previously said that there would be 10 suspects who will be brought before the court, including one Singaporean citizen.

Anti-terror unit Special Detachment 88 had found 20 bombs, 16 of them ready to be detonated, as well as dozens of kilograms of explosives hidden in the ceiling of a rented house in the city of Palembang, South Sumatra.
